I went out on a very foggy December morning to Chappell Hill, Texas. One of our group had researched an old cemetery in Chappell Hill. After waiting for the fog to lift a bit and wasting time in the cemetery with small cameras, I picked up the Linhof and walked over to the backside of the property. The fog had lifted enough that I could see a farm in the distance. The camera was new to me. A well worn beater Technika V. I only had one lens board and the Kodak Ektar 127mm lens fit the board. The field of view of the Ektar was too wide, so I had to crop severely. Thank goodness for large negatives.

I found this little toadstool late on a somber, dreary afternoon in my backyard. What little light I had was fading rapidly. Working on my stomach, I managed to get this exposure before the light disappeared and it started to drizzle. I went back the next morning and it was gone. A toadstool’s life is very short.

A late afternoon photo taken in the Sacramento Rock Garden built by the CCC during the depression. It is one of a series, mostly non-soft focus digital images of different flowers, taken during all 12 months of the year. This photo was taken with a 4x5 Speed Graphic fitted with a 49-cent magnifying glass lens given to me by Mark Sawyer - similar to the lens used for his High School class' photos featured in View Camera Magazine a couple of years ago.

My Mother’s Spoon

These were my mother’s baby spoons (and fork) that she gave me a few years before she passed away in 1999. I had wanted to photograph these for a while now, but I never found the time, so I decided to make it my project for the 2012 LF Print Exchange. After the initial setup, I tried using the Cooke 229 mm (PS 945), but I could not get the desired angle of view. Then I decided to see what the Schneider 120 mm macro lens could offer. And there it was, exactly what I had envisioned. Nothing fancy was performed here; just a simple piece of black velvet on a small table with window light and no fill. I employed a little bit of tilt (I love the A/S orbix) and counted out-loud to five for the exposure.
