The Flatiron Building
| The Flatiron Building |
| Description: |
The Photo: Located at 23rd and 5th Avenue in New York City, the Flatiron Building is an iconic structure. In December 2008, I made my first trip here with my 11x14 camera and a newly constructed 5½ x 14 half-darkslide. I had purchased two a year or so before, but never got up the gumption to cut it until much later. Surprisingly it was quite easy.
The other “new” aspect for me was the concept of select focus which I had read about in View Camera magazine. I loved the concept and was eager to give it a try.
When composing this shot, I had a few goals in mind. 1) Keep the building within a half-darkslide. 2) Do my best to make sure modern-day visuals were cropped out, like the street, traffic lights, etc. 3) Use selective focus to do something interesting. 4) Attempt to keep the parallax lines as straight as possible. 5) Try not to screw it up by forgetting which side of the film I had exposed.
Ultimately, I achieved most of my goals with the exception of goal #4. The number of people who wanted to talk with me about the camera on a Saturday afternoon coupled with my obsession over goal #1, coupled with my running out of front rise essentially made me run out of patience for parallax. Oh well.
This was printed using the Van Dyke process. I’ve been experimenting with a good number of processes from Cyanotype to Van Dyke to Albumen to Salt Prints. I haven’t done a lot of toning, so in this case I chose VanDyke for the color alone. I love the look – the problem is duplicating the process consistently for 10 prints. With no UV printer, I can assure you that all of your prints are quite different, no matter how hard I tried. Hope you enjoy it nonetheless!
I love the Flatiron Building, no matter how many times it’s been shot. I feel fortunate to live in NYC – for those who like architecture & history like me, there’s so much to shoot!
About Me: On June 23, 2006 I posted my first thread on the LF Forum asking whether I should enter large format with an 11x14 camera. By August 2006 I had bought it. My goal was to make alt. process prints, which I’ve begun doing as of August 2008. I love it! No regrets.
